The Bespoke Way

Bespoke Care offers culturally and life affirming therapy and communal workshops. We support Black women as they return back to self through authentic self-discovery. Our practice aids in the healing journeys of clients in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area, and beyond through in-person and virtual sessions.

At Bespoke Care, we do not aim to “fix” people. We set out to tap into the ancestral legacy of Black women’s strength, love, and resistance to bring out the authentic version of you that already exists within.

The way we see it: Healing is a collaborative journey meant to encourage agency. We work alongside you to forge the best path toward active growth, uplifting you to take a direct role in your own care plan.

Through a holistic, compassionate, and understanding approach, we can work together to bring that whole version of you to the forefront. Your fuller self is within; it's time to let it shine through.

Bespoke empowers Black women to free, define, and claim ownership over themselves through culturally and life affirming therapy. Our mission is to help Black women step into their innate power, releasing themselves of worldly burdens, and centering their personal healing and growth.

Womanist and liberatory frameworks allow us to understand that while we all have what is needed within us, we are still faced with the realities of societal -isms. To put it frankly: Life can be hard. We are not here to minimize that. We are here to get real about it and navigate ways to prosper in spite of.

Survival, even when it looks “good,” isn’t really living at all. We are here to make living an art. Inspired by the collective legacy of those who came before us, we acknowledge that we already have access to the wisdom needed to be well. Bespoke is here to bring out that wisdom, strength, and hope together.

Our Owner

Angelina Nortey

With Angelina N. Nortey, PhD at the helm, Bespoke Care’s work is rooted in devotion, intentionality, lived experience, and culturally affirming theory. Dr. Nortey is a licensed psychologist specializing in grief and trauma, and a certified yoga teacher who is committed to addressing the way oppressive systems impact our well-being. As a New York native with roots in Ghana, she understands the complexities of Black diasporic life and how our culture and identity inform experience. Whether you’re the 20-something looking to combat society’s limiting beliefs, the mom trying to balance it all, or the seasoned woman stepping into her next chapter of life, Bespoke Care warmly opens its doors to Black women of all experiences to thrive.

Dr. Nortey’s understanding of diasporic nuances comes from direct lived experience. At the end of the day, when she walks into the world she does so as a Black woman, and understands the layers that come with that. This understanding has created a level of respect, empathy, warmth, and community-minded disposition that ignites Dr. Nortey’s passion for this work.

Bespoke Care utilizes the inclusive framework of Womanism and Black feminist liberation that centers all Black women and provides the tools for them to center themselves as well. Fundamentally, we aim to pour into each of our clients at their core. Taking a page from June Jordan’s book, we can confidently say: you are who you've been waiting for. Generations of brilliant Black women have navigated through this world so that you may exist, and we are here to help you step into that legacy.

Testimonials

  • We co-created a transformative space in the group. We witnessed and encouraged each other's growth as we launched new chapters of our lives. What I treasure the most are the positive reflections each group member shared with me. They are a mirror for how I see myself.

  • Dr. Nortey is intentional in the group work that she does and in making sure that group members are a good fit. It felt great to be in a space with other Black women who could relate to my journey. The space, even though it’s online, felt safe and sacred. My experience with group therapy was special to me and played a significant role in my healing process.

  • I had the great pleasure of being in a group therapy facilitated by Dr. Nortey. Everything from the group members, topics, group facilitator, and after care notes were amazing. I have grown and healed so much through my individual sessions, but group therapy took it to the next level. There is so much I gained from healing in community. This form of communal care is everything I didn't know I needed.

  • After being in and out of talk therapy for over 10 years, working with Angelina was the greatest experience I’ve ever had with a therapist. Her ability to provide actionable tools that have helped me resource myself and her ability to balance talk therapy with EMDR and other somatic therapy methods have given me a handle on my anxiety, trauma, and emotions that I have never experienced. I have referred two friends to her, and I recommend her to anyone who has the opportunity! She is truly gifted at what she does and the world needs more therapists like her!

  • I have benefited tremendously from therapy with Dr. Nortey. Each session is a healing space that empowers me with increased insight, tools, resources, understanding, and compassion for myself and others. She is able to see through my words to guide our sessions. Her approach is unique—she is well-versed in therapy approaches (especially around trauma, grief, and anxiety), and our work has incorporated literature, scholarship, and resources rooted in womanist theology and an appreciation for the many layers of me!
